From November through March, powerful north swells create ideal conditions for surfers seeking challenging waves. The bay offers a variety of breaks suitable for different skill levels, with the outer reef producing larger waves for experienced surfers. Local surf schools provide lessons and board rentals for those looking to experience the thrill of riding Hanalei’s legendary waves. In the summer, Hanalei often has great beginner friendly waves but always check with a lifeguard to make sure its a good idea to surf! Remember, when in doubt, don’t paddle out!
Popular Breaks include: The Pier, Pavilions, The Cape, Pine Trees and the Bowl. Beginners, you want to stick to the pier!
Transportation
Hanalei is accessible via Kuhio Highway, which connects to other parts of Kauai. Public transportation options are limited; therefore, residents and visitors often rely on personal vehicles or bicycles. The town’s compact layout makes it pedestrian-friendly, encouraging walking and cycling - but this is in Hanalei town. You want to take a ride in a vehicle to get down to Hanalei. Ride share is available but it can be limited, so if you need an Uber or Lyft, make sure you schedule one early :)
